Important Themes
Made Up Stories
Through out the whole book Jeannette tells us these made up stories to go along with her story. Shown in the chapter Deuteronomy just like those small stories in the middle of each chapter, anything she's saying about her life could partly made up to give it emphasis or what not. To go further than that, Jeannette Questions whether everything in the Bible is true, people recreate the past in the way that tey remember it, not so much the way it happened.
Good vs. Evil
In the book Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, Jeannette's mother has a clear distigsion between good and evil. What Jeanette tries to show us is that, her being a homosexual as well as a christian, blurs that line between good and evil. She shows us that it may not be as easy to tell good from bad as one might think.
Oranges
Oranges play a major role in this book. For most of the story the only fruit that Jeanette's mother would allow Jeanette to eat were oranges. "To her, oranges were the only fruit", as said by Jeanette. I believe this sows us how closed off Jeanette's mother was to new ideas and beliefs. Though, by the end of the book Jeanette's mother is shown packing pineapple slices for a neighboring Church, showing her growth in abstract thinking.
